Tree cabling and bracing are supplemental support systems used to help manage specific structural weaknesses. They may be considered when a tree has:

- A valuable canopy that may reasonably be preserved
The objective is not to “fix” the tree or guarantee that it will never fail.
The objective is to reduce mechanical stress or limit movement in a specific part of the tree while supporting a realistic preservation plan.
Structural support is often combined with selective pruning, plant health care, and periodic inspection.
Understanding the Difference
Cabling vs. Bracing
Tree Cabling
Cables are installed between limbs or stems in the upper portion of the canopy to help redistribute loads and limit excessive movement around weak branch unions or heavy limbs.
Cabling may be used to support co-dominant stems, weak branch attachments, broad or overextended canopy sections, or mature limbs that cannot be sufficiently reduced through pruning alone.
Tree Bracing
Bracing rods are installed through trunks, stems, or branch unions that require more rigid reinforcement — such as a split or crack, a weak union requiring stabilization, or multiple stems separating near their point of attachment.
Bracing addresses movement at or near the point of concern. Cabling provides support farther into the canopy.

Protecting High-Value Trees From Lightning Damage
Large, prominent trees can be particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes. A strike may damage bark, wood, roots, vascular tissue, or nearby property — and the full extent of injury may not always be immediately visible.
A professionally installed tree lightning protection system creates a preferred pathway for electrical energy to travel from the upper canopy toward the ground.
A lightning protection system cannot prevent lightning from striking the tree, and it cannot guarantee that no damage will occur. It is intended to reduce the likelihood of severe injury when properly designed, installed, grounded, and maintained.
The system typically includes:
- Conductors extending through the canopy
- Properly positioned attachment points
- A continuous pathway down the trunk
- Grounding components installed within the soil
When Lightning Protection May Be Considered

Lightning protection is not appropriate for every tree. It may be worth considering when:
